The first half of the 20th century was not kind to the island nation of Parubalatang, in the South China Sea. Now stepping out from the wreckage of the Second World War, the last descendants of the Cobra Marked King can rebuild their lives on the sunny side of the American Century. Young Stephen See leaves his homeland to make a better life for himself in California, not realizing the psychological price he's paying until it's too late. And his big sister Star, left holding the bag at home, grapples with cut-throat local politics while trying to find a romance that her nation can tolerate.
